Annihilation is the story of an invading species of hostile beings from outside of our galaxy and depicts the human fight against the invasion. Each deck of the set represents a phase of the invasion and the court cards a character within each phase. A solar eclipse marks the second phase of the coordinated attack on human kind. Almost all animal life has succumb to starvation and all plant life has expired. During the eclipse an unrecognised species of vine begins growing from the decaying corpses of animals. The insect life that had survived starvation begins to amass on these vines for nourishment.
