Edo Karuta Daimyo [Bicycle]

Flagrant Agenda // 2020

2020 DOTY Award Nominee: 'Best Ace', 'Best Rookie Deck'

The aesthetic mainstay of Edo Karuta is the ubiquitous Edomoji, Japanese typographic and lettering styles that were invented and vastly popular during the Edo period. They are primarily used for advertising and branding in the various trades that sprung up during the prosperous epoch before the advent of modern Japan. You can still see many traditional Japanese brands using Edomoji in their marketing efforts. Walk by any Japanese restaurants and you will bound to see banners with Edomoji written on them. In Edo Karuta, these typographical elements are superimposed onto each other to make up interesting and visually arresting motifs, the signature style of MILTZ that we saw in his Shibuya Bluffiti project. You can see these representations most clearly in our card backs.

Generation One was born out of our desire to mix Luke's technical, unique graphic design language with my retro 1980's brand aesthetic to create a unique deck of cards that is sure to add some neon flare to your card flourishes, as well as a standard foundation to lend itself to magicians who want to spice up their gig bag, but not in the traditional 80s vibe we see.

Moai (v2)

Bocopo // 2019

By this deck, the designer decided to pay tribute to the mysterious stone giants of the Easter Island. He believes that they could indeed be a gift from an extra-terrestrial civilization. For that reason, you can find a couple of aliens hiding in the patterns of this deck. The design is constructed out of juxtaposed geometric shapes, which altogether create a three-dimensional effect. The edges of the cards are black, which is a rare occurrence among the other decks. All the aforementioned elements combined with cleverly placed subtle red lines on the back design offer a unique experience sure to catch the eye of many.

Featuring 56 custom playing cards printed by United States Playing Card Co with legendary Air-Cushion Finish.

Each of the cards features an illustration or phrase that depicts the card's value and suit in a new and surprising way. For example: An octopus depicts one of the eights. A lion is one of the kings. The ten commandments is one of the tens. For the suits, we've created four distinct families of illustrations or phrases. Each thirteen-card family has its own style and theme. Cards that go together in a family make up each suit. We've also created two very special and unusual jokers. That's all we'll give away! The rest is for you to figure out!

    Since the dawn of time, man has felt drawn to the sea and its infinite mysteries. We try to understand it in many ways: exploring, inventing stories, immersing ourselves in its crystal waters or simply through dreaming. To celebrate this fascination with the ocean Jocu has created ONDA, a deck of cards depicting a fantastical marine mythology. Twelve colourful characters that incorporate the necessary characteristics to live and survive the azure depths, where life assumes surprising forms and colours and humans are permitted to see only a small part. ONDA, the fourth project by Jocu Playing Cards, is a colourful, visual exploration of this world and its both real and imagined creatures.
