It started with one question: Why doesn't everyone know who Nikola Tesla is? The 'War of Currents' shaped our everyday way of life. From the light bulbs in your home to the wireless internet at the local cafe. History books in schools are riddled with Thomas Edison's greatest moments, so where is Nikola Tesla? Why don't more people know about the 'War of Currents'? THE IDEA We have always thought the best way to learn something is through entertainment. From there, it evolved into playing cards. We thought everyone from all walks of life and passions can enjoy a good card game... why not put a history lesson in a deck of cards? Well, that's what we did! THE LOOK Our goal was to design a deck of cards that provided a feel of nostalgia, similar to the cards from the late 1800's/Early 1900's. We wanted to tell the story of the 'War of Currents' with our concepts.

Kings of India Playing Cards illustrates the four greatest dynasties of India to share the extravagance and beauty of India’s story. That’s a big ask for a deck of cards, so here’s how we're going to do it:

MARVELOUS ILLUSTRATIONS

Every inch of this deck has been custom-illustrated from scratch by our Montreal-based design studio, Humble Raja. We’re the same detail-obsessed duo from Apartment 4 design, so you can rest assured that we've even taken the time to draw chest hair.

SOLID RESEARCH

Each court card reveals the bold personality of a legendary monarch of India, his queen and future successor. We have consulted books, artifacts, documentaries, architecture and sculptures to exemplify their contribution to India’s story visually through the details and design of each character.

PREMIUM QUALITY

Kings of India will be professionally printed by the United States Playing Card Company [USPCC], the same makers of the Bicycle® and Bee® brand, casino-grade playing cards. This means exceptional quality used by the pros, all made in the USA.

code deck (aka code:deck) was created by Varianto 25 (aka Varianto:25) in 2013. In 2016 they launched a KickStarter project to create a version 2 of the deck which would be referred to as the modern version with both a traditional matte paper and plastic card version which were delivered in 2017. This entry is for the original (aka classic or v1 version) deck.

Designed by Penn and Teller. There exist different versions of this deck with different gaff cards, like a card featuring Penn on the 3 of clubs or a card featuring a "14 of clubs".

There was a 5,000 deck print run made in 2008 in Red Backs only (https://www.portfolio52.com/deck/8870/view). In 2013, a reprint in conjunction with HOPC was done in Red and Blue backs. This edition is easily distinguished from the first edition by the HOPC info on the bottom flap.

The Green, Orange, Gold, Silver, Turquoise and Fuchsia Rider Back were produced by Italian Vincenzo Di Fatta, who also have produced a Rainbow Rider Back. Deck has one joker and three gaff cards.
