The Inspiration for this project has been an interesting one. So many of my decks in the past have centered around a theme or a specific moment in History. Because of this, I have always had historical characters to feature in my decks depending on the theme.

For this project, the beginnings were a little bit different. Many times between projects I will spend a few days just gathering reference and pouring over tons of beautiful images of art and other things that I might find inspiration from.

As I was searching for a creative direction for a new project, a song began to play on my playlist that really caught my attention. My wife sometimes calls me a nerd in my choice of music. I enjoy listening to all types of music but when I am working I seem to find the most focus listening to instrumental music from cinema, games, and other types of media.

This song captivated me, and it was the catalyst for the entire project. I put it on repeat and listened to it to all day while creating a completely new set of court cards from the images of, what I would describe as a mixture of Sci-Fi and Fantasy. The designs that transpired over the course of the day were promising to me, and most of very different from any of my previous work.

The title of the deck was actually derived from the title of the song that sparked it, Invocation.

The Copper Editions will be printed by The United States Playing Card Company on Premium Stock with Air Cushioned Finish. The cards and artwork will feature brilliant Copper metallic inks.

The tuck box will be printed by Clover St Press featuring hot foil stamped with Copper and Black Foil. Embossed to enhance the look and feel of the tuck case.

Originally intended to be an identity exploration, it manifested into a commemorative passion project, made for devotees of the card community.

Artful by nature. Disruptive by design. This deck delivers cardists, gamblers and card collectors an unmatched experience that respects tradition and rewards the imagination.

Give your poker face something to smile about.

The distinctively black backside gives a sense of mystery to your opponents as the faces are designed with bold & bright elements. Number cards hold more appeal with black or white text set against a vibrant green background. It's like having a plush poker table in the palm of your hands.

Court cards are framed in green, but have a splash of white to set them apart from the number cards, adding some impact to your royal hand. The inner-pips even increase in saturation as you go up the royal hierarchy.

At last one day the dog attacked her so furiously that she lost courage, resumed vulpine shape, leaped over a fence and fled. “You may be a fox”, Ono called after her, “but you are the mother of my son and I love you. Come back when you please; you will always be welcome”. So every evening she stole back and slept in his arms.

Sumi Playing Cards – Kitsune is Card Experiment's 2nd collaboration with ToKMR Graphics following our highly successful

In Kitsune, we continue to translate and transform the traditional Japanese tattoo art form of Wabori into playing card style, retaining as well as enhancing many of the interesting and delightful features we had in Sumi Playing Cards. The focus of Kitsune centers around the fox spirit, a staple in Japanese folklore. We scoured many different sources of folktales, stories and myths about fox spirits and selected a few well-known ones as sources of inspiration for the characters in the court cards. Kistune continues to serve as a homage to Wabori and faithfully represents the visual nuances and quality that is the hallmark of Japanese traditional tattoo once again, creating a visual playing card masterpiece like no other, a masterpiece that weaves fantastical stories of begone time with modern playing card aesthetics.

Animals and objects that have been used in magic to fascinate audiences for several decades are carefully depicted throughout the whole deck, from doves and rabbits to swords and handcuffs.
