A beautifully hand-drawn limited edition deck of playing cards printed on new sustainable E27 card stock made from grass and leafy parts of plants. The Castle deck illustrates castle life during the medieval times. Limited to 2500 decks.

During wartime, the castle is a fortress and usually the target of the opposition. There is a belief that once the castle falls, the city falls. The King of Spades card shows an army general plotting how to invade the castle up ahead with the belief that if the castle falls, the city falls.

The 'Wheel of the Year', the relatively modern amalgamation of the seasonal festivals of the Celtic, Anglo-Saxon and Norse peoples, features eight different festivals taking place roughly twice every season, most importantly during the solstices and the mid-points between them.

Between the Spring Equinox and Summer Solstice is where Beltane is celebrated, the beginning of the sun's final waxing cycle towards its highest point in late June. With crops and plants ripening and nature being fully awake, Beltaine was celebrated - and is still celebrated today throughout parts of Ireland and the rest of the world - as a festival of fertility, creative energy and fruitfulness.

Introducing Ad Fontes, Renaissance Playing cards, featuring hand-painted imagery by artist Ritu Bhattacharya.

Ad Fontes, meaning, “back to the source” in Latin, was a closely held belief for Martin Luther, among many others. Luther believed that old Greek sources were more important than the Pope’s word, which led him to become the father of Lutheranism.

This project was planned with the idea to create a deck of cards to tell the story of the Renaissance. To add a layer of authenticity, these cards were drawn using prevalent artistic techniques from the era. Also, the old paper-like appearance harks back to earlier knowledge and doctrines.
