The idea for this deck, The Lepidopterist, started as just that: an idea — one that I wasn't sure would ever come to fruition. Between jobs, I would work on it and, after many months, it was finally ready to bring to you! The real inspiration for this deck came from two main things:

• Art Nouveau design and architecture, specifically conservatories/sun rooms

• The incredibly beautiful Chrysiridia rhipheus, better known as the Madagascan Sunset Moth

Both are so unique and so beautiful. Art Nouveau brought an elegant, almost psychedelic, look to the end of the Victoria era and the Sunset Moth has such vibrant, iridescent colors, it almost doesn't seem real. Their special appeal combined to inspire this project.

Thus, The Lepidopterist playing cards were born— a deck of cards inspired by elegant architecture and nature, bringing elements of both into the creation of something I hope you will be proud to be a part of.

Killer Bees are the mutant hybrid of timid European honey bees and their African cousins.  Like all superhero stories, the Killers were introduced to Brazil by mad scientists to help re-populate their diminishing Bee population.  But no-one could contain them... In 1957, 26 swarms escaped quarantine and declared war on the western hemisphere.  Danger lurking in the skies, these villains will stalk their victims for up to 1/2 a mile..  We wanted to capture the darker bodies of these cold-face killers in our deck. Creating a harsh black back with toxic-waste yellow honeycomb spilt on the back.  The black faces display custom pips and hold a sinister simplicity. Like something you'd expect to see on a discarded barrel of methylamine.  Killer Bees are the result of an unsanctioned lab experiment when toxic-waste spilled into a delicate hive of Honey Bees.

After making hugely popular Killer Bee and Super Bee designs in the past, Ellusionist knew there was only one more level that remained unexplored... The revered monarch herself - the Queen Bee. Unlike their Killer and Super Bee decks, which feature a faint white halo around the deck's edge - Queen Bees have no border. The Queens spill over the edge in their glorious abundance. The tuck-paper is matte yellow and thicker than standard deck cases. All details on the sides and front are debossed to create texture. The back of the tuck is foiled in black stripes featuring the life-giving Queen, taken from the Queen of clubs within the deck.
