Steve originally submitted this deck for us after he created it is a promotional piece for his son's elementary school's stage production of Alice in Wonderland. After falling in love with the deck, we approached Steve to launch this stunning promotional deck into a produced campaign, with a portion of the proceeds going to Loyal Heights Elementary School.

These limited edition playing cards, designed by Turnstyle, are inspired by Lewis Caroll’s classic fairy tale Alice in Wonderland. Modern styling combined with lavish Art Nouveau/Art Deco ornamentation transport us down the rabbit hole to a surreal world presided over by the Queen of Hearts. Iconic quotes from the story are peppered throughout the deck and on the tuck box. Court cards feature typographic royals with custom suit symbols as crowns. Attention to typographical nuances, including a bespoke “double” typeface, are evocative of the mysterious parallel worlds of both Wonderland and cardistry—where sleight of hand means that what you see is not necessarily what you get. We are glad to announce our newest project “Heroes of the Nations”. Considering the popularity of fantasy style movies and computer games nowadays, I believe this genre will appeal to many of you. For 2 years we have been creating the heroes of 4 races and we believe the deck that we've created is a small masterpiece. We hope you will appreciate it as much as we do! Given the ambition of this project, we are making the deck of a high quality, and planning to have it printed by the famous USPCC. It will be a limited edition deck. We are planning to make 2 colors of decks, the dark and the light, consisting of 52 standard playing cards.

Our lead artist Oleg Shapkin used an original painting technique to create this deck. The images were drawn with watercolor pencils and clarified with gouache titanium dioxide pigments. The artist had drawn all of the smallest details, ornaments, letters, suits and symbols by hand and only after that the designer continued the work.

students of Estonian Art Academy which is located in Tallinn -capital of Estonia. In 2015 we had a lot of projects connected with forests, so from that moment was born an idea called Arbores Playing Cards.

Arbores is a Latin word that means "Tree". There was no difficulty to find the name for the deck, but since it was our first playing card project, at the beginning of the draft, we hadn't good ideas for it. 

Our friends Edwin Krys and Ailjay Boitchuk have an experience in this field so, they helped us with making photos and some PS and Ai work.

Now, after 8 months of hard work, we want to represent to you our finished project, which is designed for the playing card lovers, nature lovers and too ltd. playing cards collectors.

THE DECK

The dark green background brings out the silver ornaments on the tuck case. Only some parts of ornaments will be foiled, including text such as "Arbores", Tuck sides, bottom and also some elements like birds. The fine detail of each hand drawn card is reminiscent of a hard working. Arbores will have a print run of 150 or more. Each deck will be numbered and this deck will never be re-printed.

Grotesk Macabre is the evolution of "Grotesque", which was the UC2014 annual deck. Taking this deck as a starting point, I tried to create my own vision of the Underworld. Although a joyful and positive person myself, I had always been attracted to dark themed artwork. I find fascinating how artists throughout the centuries have imagined the world of the dead and how they dealt with the greatest fear of mankind. In Grotesk Macabre I tried to combine the darkest of all themes with the heavy elegance of baroque and the pointy, flamboyant Gothic art.

In China, the sacred and auspicious phoenix, alongside the imperial dragon, is worshipped and celebrated by the nation due to their connection to the hope for a good life and deep love. They say that when a phoenix spreads its majestic wings, the surroundings are blinded by the brilliant sunlight reflecting off them. That exact fantastical picture has inspired me to create this new deck called “Dark Phenoix - Parasol Tree Playing Cards”. The ”Dark Phoenix” tries to express the glorious sight of a phoenix spreading its wings, facing the sunlight.

There are images of Angels and Demons in the world art, which excite the minds of people for many centuries. They express the eternal, familiar to everyone concepts of good and evil. These images are directly opposite to each other, but at the same time merged into an eternal confrontation, they need each other, because without light there will be no shadow, and without night it is not clear what day means.
