I was inspired by the original William Wallace Denslow illustrations of the L. Frank Baum tale, I wanted to create a unique deck that paid homage to the original character illustrations from the book. From the rough-looking wicked witch to the merry band of friends like the Scarecrow, Tinman, and Cowardly lion, all the court cards revive century-old characters in a brand new light.

So many people are accustomed to ruby red slippers and a wicked witch with a green nose, flying broom, and a long pointy nose, when none of those iconic elements weren't introduced into culture until the movies came out years later in all their technicolor goodness. I wanted to push past the tinsel town interpretation and offer up my own versions of the original illustrations. Wizard of Oz is a deck full of both color and lively characters that help tell a timeless story.

Not only is Axis a deck of cards with a unique approach to design and conceptualism, it's a deck of cards with a twist. Literally.

When designing Axis, we had to make sure we executed the conceptual part of the design in a way that wouldn't take away from the overall smoothness of the deck in motion.

The concept is simple: create a deck that when riffled through can rotate a globe 360 degrees, representing the full rotation of earth in a complete year. In executing this, we mixed the conceptual part of the deck with the actual design. Flaunting a Neo-Tokyo esq design, with a bright green and deep blue contrasting color palette, Axis brings a flashy concept to life with a completed and styled back design.

The unique artistic style achieved with the Robin Hood playing cards took heavy inspiration from the Bayeux Tapestry - a French tapestry from around 1066. If you look closely at each card, you'll find that designer Jackson Robinson drew every stitch by hand to create this incredible display of artistic achievement.

The tuck case was intricately designed to resemble an ancient book, including life-like features to resemble canvas and leather design-work, a book spine, frayed paper edges and finished with realistic wear-n-tear details.
