History was never kind to women as traditional history obscured, neglected, and distorted the historical record and experience of many great women. No matter how hard they fought to become a writer, poet, scientist or an artist, being a woman was a huge drawback in any society, but in the end they had another battle to overcome, fighting not to be eliminated by the hands of history.

Among these noble women, some were known for their warrior spirit, the spirit to participate on battlefields, the manliest place, a place where no woman was welcome, yet there were some, who broke the tradition. In these battlefields not only did they fight as good as men, but some of them were leaders or had a special role in the war. All these women warriors fought back against a male-dominated world.

In this project, we tried our best to know these great warriors, to honor the past, inform the present and inspire the future.

We left Africa on foot many millennia ago and traversed the continents. The seas kept pace with our ambitions, and our thirst for exploration guided us forward, or more so survival. Then came the bloody wars, and ages of prosperity and calm, but there was one land that taunted our efforts, that was the sky above.

Great minds like Leonardo designed incredible machines that alas never took to the skies. But our desire unrequited, we paced on, trying to conquer the infallible.

Though finally, we built mechanical marvels to traverse the heavens and beyond, our ancestors dreamt big in their minds and spun great tales of mighty heroes who made air their companion as we do thoughts.

Alis Luminis or "Wings of Light" is a hand-drawn playing card deck in celebration of these mighty heroes from yesteryears.

Wings inspired the tuck box, with the magical, gentle butterfly adorning the back and the mighty Peryton reigning the front. The artist illustrated this beautiful hand-drawn deck, over a period of one and a half years, meticulously crafting it with her dedication and love.

Gambling is considered a sin among Christian and many religions, the concept of using the images of saints and biblical characters - and one could say double so of the family of Jesus and Abraham - in order to act out such a sin could be considered blasphemous and insulting to the religion. This was a significant consideration whilst building this deck, but my mind was settled when conducting my research; I found the Catholic Church of England & Wales themselves use the image of Jesus as the King of Hearts and using cards to help the youth to reflect on their relationships. Ethnicity was another consideration, and has been discussed in some length with religious and scholarly experts. I decided to stay in line with traditional western interpretations of the Bible characters as I have based my cards on my own experiences of the Bible. Some of the best art in the world is inspired by, or directly taken from the bible, and whilst this deck may not be up there with the masters, I hereby present you with my deck: Testament, a classic styled deck for the collector. Our company, Any Means Necessary, is made up of Shawn Coss and Michael Nemitz, a clothing and art brand out of Ohio that is always looking to push the boundaries on what a brand is and should be.

Shawn, known best for his mental health series, Inktober Illness, and It's All in Your Head, recently decided that he wanted to tackle a more traditional series with a history that dates decades back. We've all played various games with traditional poker cards.
