From the Kickstarter campaign: With our fourth deck we wanted to take a different approach in art style to keep everyone guessing. We decided to continue with the pharmacy theme, but present it in a silly and creative way. Back in the early to mid 1900's, pharmacies were not only a place to buy medications, they also sold all types of items from milk to birdseed. I found an old pharmacy Almanac from 1926 and quickly showed it to Elettra. I tossed the idea to her for a pharmacy Almanac deck of cards with different advertisements and she instantly loved the idea. She tried a few art styles and quickly found the perfect one to portray the proper era as well as giving it her own personal feel. We spent many months coming up with various ideas for advertising and having everything feel cohesive. We have left many little gems to find that represent our quirky sense of humor, so we hope that you find new treasures each time you pick up the deck. Elettra spent SO much time creating this work of art and made sure that the uncut version was cohesive and had interplay. If you don't end up with an uncut sheet, then I encourage you to lay out the cards in order and see which cards interconnect with each other. Since the deck was inspired by an Almanac booklet, and since Elettra and I LOVE books (see our Sweet Tooth Chronicles), we decided to make a special version where the cards are tucked inside a Pharmacy Almanac book! Camelot is a custom deck of playing cards inspired by the legends and artistic illustrations of King Arthur and other characters, combining detailed elegance expertly printed on high quality materials. Art illustrations are created by the talented Magdalena "Bubug" Kaczan.

Camelot was the legendary castle and court associated with the legend of King Arthur. The stories locate the castle somewhere in Great Britain. The court has become a symbol of chivalry, the brotherhood of warriors and the ideas of courtly love. Camelot is described as a magnificent castle with a round table where Arthur and his knights would gather. The table was said to have been crafted by Merlin and symbolized equality among the knights, as no one knight was seated higher than another. Our deck includes the court of King Arthur, his allies and his enemies.

He adopted the name of "Brother Spartacus" within the order and established a documented connection with masonic guilds. Even encyclopedia references vary on the goal of the order, such as New Advent saying the Order was not egalitarian or democratic internally, but sought to promote the doctrines of equality and freedom throughout society; while others such as Collier's have said the aim was to combat religion and foster rationalism in its place.

Artistic Background

”VASE WITH ZINNIAS AND GERANIUMS” was created in 1886 and is held in the Craig Art Museum in Washington, D.C., USA. At the age of 32, Vincent Van Gogh embarked on a new endeavor, using a modern artistic approach to depict this beautiful post-Impressionist still life oil painting.

Exquisite Design

The design is centered around ”VASE WITH ZINNIAS AND GERANIUMS”, featuring rich, warm orange flowers filling a rounded vase resembling a basin, radiating brilliance and vitality. In comparison to the original artwork’s somber ochre tones, the color palette of the cards has been brightened. Delicate, pale yellow hues complement the vibrant and colorful flowers, imparting a sense of lively springtime energy to the players.

Cardistry

The card backs maintain a consistent design with the back of the card box, seamlessly integrating the theme of the famous painting into the habits of card players. With extremely narrow white borders and symmetrical, oil-paint-like textures, the cards exude sophistication. The diverse and vibrant colors - reds, yellows, blues, and greens - converge with flowers of various sizes and arrangements, creating a rich and full image. At the center shines a bright yellow chrysanthemum, serving as a focal point for the card’s positioning function.

Famous Painting Theme

Vase with Chinese Asters and Gladioli" was created in 1886, during Van Gogh's time in Paris. The overall tone of the painting is warm, with bright and saturated hues of red and pink, depicting lively and vibrant flowers.

The playing cards are designed with this oil painting as the visual theme, with abundant and colorful floral patterns covering the entire deck, showcasing intense and sophisticated colors.

Artistic Appreciation

The card box features a pure white background, with the primary color being pink derived from the original painting, adorned with yellow flower centers, and the elegant and delicate English font for the flower names.

The overall atmosphere is vivid and cheerful, with the sweet pink tones balancing the exuberance of the flowers, allowing players to immediately perceive the artistic sensibility and elegance from Van Gogh's original artwork.

Cardistry

The card back continues the design from the card box, featuring Van Gogh's famous work "Vase with Chinese Asters and Gladioli." A large area of low-saturation warm pink occupies the entire image, with the eye-catching tender yellow flower at the center providing a central positioning effect. The symmetrical design is perfectly in line with the aesthetic and usage habits of playing card enthusiasts.

Almost every flower forms a coherent waistline, unfolding layers of Chinese asters and gladioli in the hands of the player, exuding a sense of freedom and romance that no one can resist.
