Each playing card went through the press three times, for the character in one of the four suit colors, the card identification, and the Ferris Wheel on the back of each card. The paper is 100% cotton and the letterpress printing leaves a "bite" in the paper. It took me about 14,000 pulls on the printing press handle and three months to print the one hundred decks.

These cards were printed by me on a hand operated letterpress printing press, an Old Style Pilot Press made around 1920. I still have some of the limited edition of one hundred decks available here.

Introducing Ad Fontes, Renaissance Playing cards, featuring hand-painted imagery by artist Ritu Bhattacharya.

Ad Fontes, meaning, “back to the source” in Latin, was a closely held belief for Martin Luther, among many others. Luther believed that old Greek sources were more important than the Pope’s word, which led him to become the father of Lutheranism.

This project was planned with the idea to create a deck of cards to tell the story of the Renaissance. To add a layer of authenticity, these cards were drawn using prevalent artistic techniques from the era. Also, the old paper-like appearance harks back to earlier knowledge and doctrines.

The Adventures in Oz Playing Card Deck is a project inspired by the writings of L. Frank Baum. Drawing from his collection of books depicting the land of Oz, we created a vision of Oz with a modern design aesthetic. Each face card has a major character from Oz, including Dorothy’s entourage, the good and wicked Witches, and fan favorites like the Wizard and Winged Monkeys.

The decks will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company, the premier printer of poker-size playing cards that have graced the hands of famous magicians, collectors, and players dating back over 130 years.
