A 1978 reproduction by Harry Margary of the 1811 Metastasis - Transformation of Playing Cards deck. This facsimile is of the Nixon-Cowell-Jones variation of the original 1811 Metastasis deck and was estimated to be printed 1811 or possibly 1812 per Margary.  Title:Transformation Playing Cards First Published:1811 Description:For the whole of the 19th century, plus a few years at either end, a minor but attractive social fashion flourished - the "transformation card". This name is derived from the idea of "transforming" an ordinary pip card into a wider picture, it being one of the rules that the pips must form part of the overall design and also remain in their original position on the card. Unquestionably one of the most amusing and ingenious packs ever devised was one designed and etched by I. L. S. Cowell and published in about 1811 or 1812. The original wrapper bore the title "Transformation of Cards. Metastasis". Not only do many timeless social situations (audience at the theatre, congregation in church, greedy employer at table, etc.) receive suitably disrespectful treatment, but there are also glimpses of contemporary entertainment, particularly pantomimes ("Perouse” was produced in 1801 and "Obi" in 1800, for example.) A reference to "The Lady of the Lake" suggests a date for the pack as post 1810, Scott's poem being published in that year. This pack also includes the 5 Clubs "Hottentot Venus". The publishers are indebted to the Master and Wardens of the Worshipful Company of Makers of Playing Cards for permission to reproduce this pack of cards from the Phillips Collection at Guildhall Library and to Miss Sylvia Mann who prepared the Introductory Note. By Bamford of London circa 1750. The initials HC on the King of Hearts suggest the printing blocks were made by an earlier printer whose business was taken over by Bamford. The classic style of this deck makes it a good representative of cards used in both Britain and the US from early 1700s to the late 1800s. No jokers in decks this early so the included jokers have been designed by Rose & Pentagram.

The original deck was published in 1676 of which only one Pack complete with the two Preliminary Cards is thought to exist, forms a small Atlas of England and Wales. As such, it is the first Atlas to indicate roads. The King depicted on the cards is Charles II and the Queen, his wife, Catherine of Braganza. The main part of the cards was printed from engraved copper plates, with the suit marks being applied later by stencil. The cards were clearly designed to give instruction to the young, rather than for serious play.
