ABOUT THIS DECK
A restoration project breathing life into a classic deck of cards first printed over a hundred years ago by the New York Consolidated Card Company: Triton No. 42 Club Playing Cards - first produced around the year 1890, the Triton No. 42 Club Playing Cards were a premium player's deck, intended for use in high-end games rooms and homes, and were marketed as having the perfect slip and being double-enamelled for superior quality and handling.
THE New York Consolidated Card Company was first established in 1871 by a merging of powerhouse manufacturers Lawrence & Cohen, Samuel Hart and John Levy, and has gone down in history as an icon of the era. They held a manufacturing facility at 222 - 228 West 14th St, New York City before moving into 4th & Webster Aves. Long Island City, and produced a range of much-loved decks of playing cards up until 1930 when they were amalgamated into the USPCC and several major brands, including Triton, were dropped from production. The NYCCC was eventually dissolved and consigned to the history books, but their iconic decks of playing cards are some of the most sought after and collectable in the world today, and their spirit lives on.
This is an authentic reproduction of this timeless piece of playing card art in a vintage hue of sea green, perfect to complement the nautical theme behind the Triton 42 deck. These decks are printed on premium tier stock and finish (310gsm linen by WJPC) and housed in a tuck that boasts inside-and-out printing and a custom stamp sticker seal, restored and refined from a real tax stamp found on decks of the era. Specs as follows:
- 55 Poker size playing cards - regular index (2x Jokers, 1x extra card)
- Premium stock and finish for perfect fans, cuts & shuffles
- Standard faces (custom re-colour and subtle aging FX)
- Hand-drawn illustration restoring the back, tuck, Ace of Spades & Jokers
Whether you collect antique decks or modern (or both), this is a rare opportunity for you to add this sought-after iconic deck of cards to your collection in premium, cutting-edge materials and for a fraction of the price of a genuine antique. These can be bought in multiples and used as worker decks, or displayed alongside the favourite decks in your collection.
The son of Poseidon in Greek mythology: Triton was half man, half fish, and appeared as the classic depiction of a merman, holding his conch shell trumpet with which he could summon waves and storms. He had dominion over the creatures of the sea and is pictured on the Triton 42 Joker riding a large fish. As was the way with decks of cards of this era, the Ace of Spades, Jokers, card backs and tuckbox were customised with nautical themed illustration while the face cards were a standard pattern, for maximum functionality and familiarity. The artwork has been lovingly restored by hand using original source material as a reference.
