ABSTRAKT

This collectors edition playing card deck takes itsinspiration from the Cubist art movement of theearly 20th century. Pioneering artists such asPablo Picasso and Georges Braque, influenced bythe later works of Gauguin, challenged theconventional representation of reality by breakingform down into simplified, fragmented shapeswith distorted perspective and spacial ambiguity.This, along with its reduced colour palette, was torevolutionise the way objects could be visualised. Early critics suggested the artists despised form,preferring instead to reduce everything togeometric shapes. One referred to them as 'cubicoddities', leading to the name of the style beingborn.
