Gustave Doré was born in Strasbourg, France on January 6, 1832. He was an art prodigy, illustrating from the age of 5 and sculpting from the age of 12. He excelled in engraving steel and wood. All of the artwork featured on these cards was engraved by hand.

His expressionism and dark signature are primary themes in The Raven Black Dusk. These cards show some of his most notable works, along with lesser known pieces.

Legionary is a uniquely designed custom deck of playing cards that brings together two legendary worlds: the legionary soldier and the Roman gladiator. This deck depicts the complete legendary Roman legionary armor, as well as the sparse armor, inspired by Legionaries but pared down for individual combat.

Created by Jody Eklund, Legionary captures the legend of the Roman citizen, once conscripted into a Roman Legion, and now turned Gladiator. Upon the face cards you will find fierce and fearless faces of men and women who risked their own harm for the pleasure and entertainment of the Colosseum crowds. “Fortune favors the brave,” and these gladiators need no lesson in courage!
